RIDES

by Val Leichtman

Click, click, click, click, click . . . the car slowly clicks as it rises up the inclined track. My heart begins to pound, my palms begin to sweat as I grip the handlebars so tightly my fingers tingle numbly. The clicking stops and our movement pauses for what feels like an eternity. I clench my eyes shut. “What am I doing? I don’t want to be here. Let me out,” I weakly say inside my own head. Even the thoughts are futile. I’m not sure how many hundreds of feet up in the air we are, but there’s only one way off of this ride . . . down.

I’ve always loved rides, specifically roller coasters, but I never knew until recently that I wasn’t riding them properly. The above description is almost always exactly what would play out in my head during that terrifying, interminable first incline. Last year, the BOWAworld team took at trip to Tampa for Howl-o-Scream at Busch Gardens (the same great theme park with the added fun, Halloween twists of haunted houses and people dressed up like monsters jumping out of bushes at you) and I rode a roller coaster with LJ as my partner. When we got off the ride, he informed me I rode it wrong; that I was fighting the ride with fear rather than embracing it and just allowing myself to enjoy it. I looked at him confused (and honestly, probably a little bit annoyed; I don’t like being told I’m doing something wrong, especially when it’s true), but in his unique LJ way, he shrugged his shoulders, grabbed my hand and asked me to trust him.

Normally, I would ask a million and one questions, but that night I just let him lead me back to the front of the ride and into the “front row” line. “Oh, this is what you meant, I’ve ridden at the front before,” I said. His green eyes brightened as he said, “Yes, but this time you’re going to ride with your eyes open and your hands up.” I was immediately hit with fear. I wasn’t sure if I could do it, but something (maybe the absolute desire to not let LJ see me as a coward) kept me in line. When our turn came, we sat down in our seats. As it started slowly moving, he grabbed my left hand with his right, and held our hands up high. “Now put your other hand up and keep your eyes open.” I was terrified, but I did as instructed. It was the best roller coaster ride of my life.

I’d forgotten all about this special moment until tonight, when I found myself on a metaphorical emotional roller coaster of stress, fear, worry, etc. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I was back on that October ride for a moment; the wind was in my extended hands, my eyes were open, and I was smiling as I heard LJ yelling “Keep them open!” So often, we go through the rides of our life white-knuckling it and squeezing our eyes shut till we’re back on “solid” ground, or what we know to be “normal.” The problem with riding through life this way is that we miss out on half the fun. The next time you find yourself on a roller coaster, literal or not, put your hands up and keep your eyes open. Not every twist and turn will be fun, but it’ll be an experience you’ll never forget.

SEIZE THE MOMENT!

by Bert Oliva

Seize the moment! What a powerful statement. But many don’t think so. They think opportunity will come again.

One must take action now. When you want something in life you must go after it. Why sit and wait for another moment in time? We must seize the opportunities at once.

Have you ever seen something you really wanted, but you said, “Let me think about it”? And when you go back and it’s not there. Then you ask yourself, “Why didn’t I get it?” You tell yourself you’ll keep an eye out now and when you see it again, you will get it. Yet, you never see it again or, when you finally do, you no longer need it.

That is why we must take action Now.

PowerTools:

1) Take every invitation and really think if attending the event will be beneficial for you and your dream.

2) If you see something you want, go after it.

3) Start looking for opportunity. Opportunities are there when you have your eyes opened.

Success is not by chance. It is for those who seize the Oportunities in life.

Live Life,

PUNCTUALLY CHALLENGED

by Alexa Oliva

Have you ever thought how much it costs you when you’re late? It costs about $90 billion dollars a year when CEO’s are late. It affects other people and their productivity.

Do you like it when a you have to wait in a doctors office for hours, shoot most of us can not even stand waiting for our food at a drivethru. The reality is you can never get back those moments wasted.

Being late every once in a while is ok, but being late consistently is rude. Did you know that in 19 states a student can be paddled for being late which include:

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming.

You need to learn to respect your time.

Cause life will not wait for you.

But more so stop affecting other people lives, mental state and time.

Be on time!

AGE vs. LIFE

by LJ Polin

I was watching the 2013 NBA finals, the Spurs versus the Heat, and the announcers began to start a conversation about the ages of the players that have made the largest plays in the Finals series. They were talking about if professional basketball was a young man’s sport or an old man’s sport. They said most people agreed it was a young man’s sport. Stat wise, they shared that two of the top players that made game changing plays, Tim Duncan of the Spurs and Ray Allen of the Heat, are both 37 years old. Impressive right?

The fact is that basketball is not a young man’s sport, however it is not an old man’s sport either. It is a determined players sport. Who is determined to train when others play? Who is determined to learn when others sleep? Who is determined to push when others stop?

That same truth applies to life. So many people restrict themselves to their age. “I can’t do that yet, I’m too young” or “I wish I could have done that, however I’m too old.” Why?

If you can die at any age why on earth would you choose not to live at any moment?

Life is a sport like any other. You don’t win the championship by getting tickets to the game. Sounds funny right?

People do it. Many people do it.

They sit and watch things happen in their life and restrict themselves from improvement, age not being the only reason. I don’t care if its front row, don’t buy tickets to your own game. Play your game. And only when you perfect your game will you get that championship ring. As my mentor Bert Oliva says, “Live life, don’t let life live you.”

No matter what your age.

GET OUT OF BED

by Alexa Oliva

Every day is another chance to wake up and start over, there is a strong possibility that you have heard of this before. But what does that really mean? To me, it means that even if I feel horrible one day, I go to bed, hopefully sleep and when I wake up I get to choose how the rest of my day is going to be.

If I want to be beautiful I can be, if I want to spend the day in a pair of jeans I can, if I want to feel like I’m in love I can. I get to be me however I see that every time I get out of bed.

If you really think about this it is an exciting moment in your life.

And you get to have it every day for the rest of your life.
